Tracy Russen began fencing with the Norfolk
Fencing Club in 2010.
She offers this explanation of how she became
involved and what taking up the sport has meant to her.
Fencing, not enough words to describe what a wonderful
sport this is although: exhilarating, uplifting, addictive, passion,
sociable, challenging and sometimes even frustrating comes to
mind.
I was first introduced to fencing by a friend
who wanted to go along to a taster session and asked if I would
like to join her. I was never a sportswoman and had never an inkling
about this but decided yes, I would love to, just to find out
more and if I liked it, if anything it would help to keep me fit.
So I went along and found that, yes I liked it and after my first
three weeks I found I loved it and could not wait for the next
week to come along and find out more about the basics and various
techniques and it has been a passion ever since and I try not
to miss a week. For me there is an added bonus of newfound friendships
along the way. Also, for me competitions are about doing my best
and improving but win lose or draw the pleasure is the same.
I was a foilist initially and loved it but found
myself wanting to try my hand at other weapons. Recently, I tried
the sabre and this I truly love. It ticks all my boxes and gives
me a tremendous buzz. It was as if a light had been switched on
in me. A different style of fencing is required to the foil and
epee. The sabre is a cutting and thrusting weapon and the target
area is from the waist up, excluding the hands but includes the
head.
Fencing offers you the chance to do the best you
can, have fun and make very good friends. The club coaches will
improve your technique with whichever weapon you decide to use.
There are opportunities to enter competitions locally and through
out the U.K. and abroad if you choose to compete.
I discovered fencing by accident and it is a passion
for me. If you have ever considered it do not hesitate any longer,
give it a try and see how and where it takes you!!!! Fencers are
lovely warm and friendly people and there is always a friendly
face, hand or welcome advice offered. There are both men and women
fencers, and it is a sport for people of all ages. There is also
fencing for the disabled including wheelchair fencing.
I love everything it stands for.
Francesca's story - Francesca was inspired
to take up fencing because it was an interest of her Dad's.
