Building upon the success and enjoyment fencers have from the ladder night, I plan to organise a variety of different training scenarios and events that will aid all fencers. The ultimate aim of this is to make fencers competition ready. This means that as a fencer, if you were to enter a competition you would be in good stead to perform technically to the best of your abilities.

What this entails is listed below but not limited to:

  • continuation of the ladder night
  • training scenarios e.g., 15 hit matches with a fencer starting at a deficit, squash fencing, rolling points fencing, pyramid fencing
  • team events – both within the club and with other local clubs
  • competition fencing – this would be tailored to a group of fencers who are all competing at a local or national tournament e.g., Norfolk Open. This would run for 3-4 weeks. Fencers who are not competing but are of a higher standard/experienced would be invited as this ultimately pushes those who are competing to be ready for the event.
  • Referee training
  • Recap/Tactical training on fencing specifics e.g., priority in foil, rock/paper/scissors from ‘en guard, pret, allez’
  • Can only score with certain actions – a table lists 15 chosen actions that each fencer will try to tick off over the course of the evening.
  • Holiday/Special occasion sessions e.g., Zombie Night around Halloween, Easter and Christmas Turkey competition DE’s.

So, to kick start of this new approach below is the list of what is coming for the remaining club nights in August and early September:

August 10th – On the piste exercise – Squash Fencing – Rules will be explained after the club announcements.

August 18th – On the piste exercise – 15 hit actions – Coaches will pick 15 actions. Your aim is to tick each one off before the end of the night.

August 25th – Open sparring

September 1st: Ladder Night – Matches are up to 5 hits. Seeding is based on August’s ladder results.September 8th: Team match vs Great Yarmouth and Wavney Fencing Club – If interested please speak to me by the 1st of September.

Upcoming Event: On the 15th of August Great Yarmouth and Wavney Fencing club is hosting the regions first GB league event. This event will comprise of two stages:

  1. Poule rounds in the morning. Same as it would be for a ladder night.
  2. DE after the poule rounds however, everyone will have the same number of bouts i.e. you will not be ‘eliminated’ if you lose your first DE.

The event starts at 9am and finishes at 3pm (however you can leave if early if needed).
Cost is £13 per fencer.
