Norfolk Fencing Club, UEA Fencing Club and the British Academy of Fencing are glad to have collaborated to organise a level 1 foil coaching course with Steve Morley as our coach educator.

Dates: Saturdays 1st, 8th, 15th October 2022

Time: 10am – 4pm

Venue: John Jarrold Room, UEA Sportspark, Earlham Road, Norwich, NR4 7TJ

Fees: £20 for three days without assessment or £31 with assessment. You will be contacted regarding payment details following submission of the form.

All those that wish to be assessed for their level 1 foil coaching qualification, must be at least 18 years old. We will however accept 16 year olds, on recommendation from their coach, to support how they may informally assist club coaches.

Assessments will be conducted over the course of the three days, rather than an exam at the end of the course. The level 1 course requires approximately 16 hours of tuition and therefore 3 days will provide enough time to see evidence of coaching ability that meets the standard required.

About our coach educator: Steve Morley

Steve qualified as a coach in 1999. He is on the British Fencing Coaches register with level 4 BAF Advanced Foil and Epee level 2 and has been a full member of the British Academy of Fencing for 20 years. He even spent 3 years on the BAF Committee as Proficiency Awards Administrator.

He has a wealth of experience after coaching the complete range of fencers; social/club fencers to international level including a British Cadet Champion. He has had fencers selected for the British Fencing Athlete Development Program and to represent England and GBR. He has also taken a number of his pupils from beginner to qualified coaches. Furthermore, he has assisted a BF Coach Educator delivering level 2 and 3 courses.

For his contributions to fencing, Steve received a British Fencing Award of Merit in 2018.

Steve is very keen to emphasise that despite the above, he is still learning!

What will I need for the course?

The minimum equipment for this course is your:

  • Mask
  • Jacket
  • Plastron
  • Glove
  • Steam/non-electric foils (If this is an issue, we may be able to provide some to borrow.)

If you have access to a coaching plastron, you may wish to use that, but it is not essential as the majority of the course will be looking at group lessons. You also do not need to wear breeches as we will be using  steam/non-electric foils, but of course you may wear breeches if you wish. Please do not wear shorts, your legs must be covered.

You may wish to bring a notebook to jot down notes and questions. The Sportspark does have a cafe for refreshments and water fountains around the building.
